A * STAR MICROELECTRONICS INSTITUTE AND SOITEC DEVELOP NEXT GENERATION SILICON CARBIDE SEMICONDUCTORS

Singapore, tene January 2022 –Institute of microelectronics (IME) of the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A * STAR) and Soitec (Euronext Paris) have announced a research collaboration to develop semiconductor devices in silicon carbide (SiC) of new generation to power electric vehicles and advanced high voltage electronic devices. As part of this collaboration, the parties will leverage Soitec’s proprietary technologies such as Smart Cut ™ and IME’s pilot production line to create 200mm diameter SiC semiconductor substrates.

The joint research will contribute to the development of a holistic SiC ecosystem and strengthen semiconductor manufacturing capabilities in Singapore and the region. The research collaboration is scheduled until mid-2024 and aims to achieve the following results:

  • Develop SiC epitaxy and Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor Field Effect Transistor (MOSFET) fabrication processes for Smart Cut ™ SiC substrates to produce better quality microchip transistors with fewer defects and improved through-process efficiency Manufacturing

  • Set a benchmark for SiC power MOSFET devices fabricated on Smart Cut ™ SiC substrates and demonstrate process benefits with conventional bulk substrates

This joint research between the Institute of Microelectronics of A * STAR and Soitec to develop new generation semiconductor devices using innovative technologies is made possible by the two organizations’ in-depth R&D capabilities,” noted Mr. Terence Gan, executive director of the EMI. “We look forward to working with Soitec to add value to the local R&D ecosystem and the growing pool of silicon carbide players in the semiconductor industry.,” he added.

This is a great opportunity for us to partner with the Singapore Institute of Microelectronics and demonstrate the scalability of the SmartSiC substrate up to 200mm,” noted Christophe Maleville, Chief Technology Officer and Senior Executive VP at Soitec. “Collaboration paves the way for the development of advanced epitaxy solutions to produce superior quality SiC pads with energy-efficient characteristics, given the exciting potential of this material. As the primary beneficiaries of this new process, Singapore’s semiconductor ecosystem will have the opportunity to validate the superior energy efficiency of the SiC brochures produced thanks to our collaboration. “

Soitec is a world leader in the design and manufacture of innovative semiconductor materials, headquartered in France. The company’s products are used to make chips that go into smartphones, tablets, computers, computer servers and data centers, as well as electronic components in cars, connected devices, and industrial and medical equipment. .

The A * STAR IME has heterogeneous integration, system-in-package, sensor, actuator and microsystems, RF and mmWave, SiC / GaN-on-SiC and MedTech power electronics capabilities. The 8-inch SiC pilot line it is setting up aims to validate 8-inch manufacturing processes and tools at the scale of a pilot line before a transition can be made to high-volume manufacturing of 8 inch. A dual objective of this program is to carry out applied R&D on innovative SiC MOSFET processes and materials such as Soitec’s Smart Cut ™ SiC substrates in order to pre-position the industry for the manufacture of new generation SiCs.
